Portugal
Portugal is the westernmost country in Europe. It covers an area of 92,212 km2, distributed across a continental territory and two archipelagos located to the west of the North Atlantic Ocean (Azores and Madeira). It has a population of about 10.3 million inhabitants. Lisbon, the capital, has about 2.1 million inhabitants (metropolitan area). The predominant religion is Roman Catholicism. The official currency is the Euro. Portugal abolished the monarchy in 1910. The current political system is a democratic, semi-presidential republic, composed of four "organs of sovereignty": the President of the Republic, the Assembly of the Republic, the Government and the Courts.
